Mapping Veterinary services in the north

Seeking to Better Connect Communities in Need with Veterinary Services

Access to veterinary care varies widely across Northern Ontario. Some communities enjoy ongoing services, while others rely on visiting veterinary teams or have no local access to care. Outreach teams provide essential services, including wellness exams, vaccinations, surgeries, and medical consultations, helping meet the needs of animals and the people who care for them.

Although multiple groups across the province travel north to provide this care, there is currently no centralized system to track which teams serve which communities, how often services are delivered, and what services are provided. This makes it difficult to identify service gaps, coordinate visits, and build on existing efforts. It can also lead to duplication and missed opportunities for lasting partnerships.

We are launching a project to map access to veterinary care across Northern Ontario, identifying communities with ongoing or visiting services and those without access to care.

For communities served by mobile or visiting veterinary teams, we hope to learn which organizations provide care, what services they offer—such as vaccinations, medical consultations, and surgery—and how often they visit. This first phase of the project will help identify gaps in care, reduce duplication of outreach efforts, and support coordination among organizations serving the region.
